CHARLOTTE, N.C. – We’ve learned that Wednesday night’s SWAT standoff in east Charlotte stemmed from a robbery at a nearby bank. Investigators say 25-year-old Niyo McGee was barricaded inside a home for several hours on Crestmont Drive off North Sharon Amity Road before police took him into custody around seven PM.

A police report says the SWAT standoff is related to a robbery that happened around 2:40 in the afternoon at a Bank of America branch on Albemarle Road.

Warrants say McGee was standing behind a man inside the bank as he withdrew $11,000 cash. Police say McGee followed him outside, tackled and beat him up, took the cash and drove away.

Witnesses reported a license plate number that police used to find the suspect on Crestmont Drive. McGee is charged with felony common law robbery.
